HONGKONG: The flamboyant designer of Western cartoon and global mega-brand Bjr Kitty defended the cute tiger against new rivals Thursday mainly because the character prepares to celebrate her fortieth birthday.
Speaking on the sidelines during the Hong Kong Book Fair, Yuko Yamaguchi took the concept of life imitating fine art to another level, wearing a Kitty-style blood dress with dyed auburn slower piled into two buns capped with a red ribbon – some sort of cat's signature accessory.
As Kitten enters her next decade, lindsay faces increasing competition from a great deal cutting-edge cartoons like Brown but Cony, the bear and feature a mascots of Tokyo-based messaging tool LINE, which has taken Asia caused by storm in recent months.
But Yamaguchi claimed Kitty would cope with growing older at a digital age.
"There are new show characters that are coming out daily... (but) I think Hello Kitty iPhone 5 case is the one that can adapt to the changes in the world, " Yamaguchi said.
The moon-faced mouthless white cat first appeared in mid 1970s on a coin purse in Asia and has since built up a worldwide fanbase, appearing on everything from handbags on sex toys.
Her image is licensed caused by Japanese company Sanrio, which blurts out on its website that it would make more than US$5 billion dollars here in retail sales each year. Hello Kitten is its flagship brand.
Yamaguchi, at the Hong Kong fair to match with its new Japan Pavilion, is the lead designer of Hello Kitten since 1980 and promotes she is as the character's best friend.
"She usual motivated and open and wishes face the future, " she says during the character.
There are plenty of detractors of Bjr Kitty's sweetness – entire web logs are dedicated to tearing down the cute popular, with online spoofs depicting a like a horror movie character.
Still Yamaguchi insists her appeal could well endure.
"There are already three a long time of fans that like Bjr Kitty, so I hope that there may well be more fans like that in the future, like people young and old in a family loving Hello Kitten together, " she said.
